Mayu ~ Eco Friendly, Fair Trade Hand Knit Accessories

First things first – I know what you’re thinking. Why’s Amy posting about scarves and hats at this time of year? Well here in Vancouver we really never know what we’re going to get weather-wise. The month of July can have more in common with November than any of us would like to admit! Hopefully it’s not going to be one of “those years” – but you never know…

When Kate, founder of Mayu, commented on a post recently I was happy to find her gorgeous site. Not only is all of her knit work clearly stylish – she has worked to develop relationships with women in Peru who now knit all of Mayu’s goods by hand. These women are able to earn fair wages and are able to stay with their children too. If this isn’t enough of a feel good story – I’m also encouraged to learn that the alpaca fiber each piece is made from is eco-friendly!

Here at Handmade Evolution it’s important to us to feature local artists and events when we can (from the 3 cities where we have writers – Portland, Toronto, and Vancouver) as well as creators who go that extra mile to create goods that are eco-friendly. I was very pleased this last week when a friend recommended the work of talented Vancouver local, Laura Bucci, to me. For me, feathers are the perfect accessory this season. Natural textures are a compliment to any outfit and you’re guaranteed a perfect match since feathers come in thousands of colours, shapes and patterns from stripes to dots and everything in between. Delicately blowing in the wind, feathers also add visual excitement to a look. I love the fanciful feel of feather jewelry and uniqueness of the materials. What would you wear with feathers?
