Salazar

salazar

We’re taking a bit of time out this afternoon to go see this exhibit at the W2 Storyeum near our house – I’ve got lots of work waiting for me when I return home, but I’ll pretend that’s not the case! Was browsing through the exhibitors for the show and came upon this video from local motion picture collective, Salazar – I’m usually not a fan of video on the web (short attention span) – but their 2010 demo reel drew me in big time. It doesn’t hurt that I’m a big fan of the Katie Stelmanis song they chose (make sure you watch with the sound on!) – and seeing British Columbia featured in such a beautiful light is awesome too. Definitely the kind of video that makes you want to venture outside – even if the weather isn’t the greatest.

Hope your weekend is fun!

Karen Jess – Shell Jewelry

September 15, 2010

karen jess shell jewelry

I’ve been a fan of Karen Jess’s beautiful shell jewelry for several months now. I love that each piece is handcrafted here in Vancouver from a shell that she’s found on one of her many surf trips. My husband is really into surfing, and I’ve dabbled a time or two, though I prefer boogie boarding when the water is warm and the waves are a fun size and speed. I’ve got lots of great summer memories of time at the beach with friends and family – spending hours out in the surf, picnicking on the beach and retreating in the evening to a campsite or lodge for games and S’mores.

Just as we say our goodbyes to summer – I think it’s great that Karen Jess has opened up her long awaited online shop, so we can get a little something to remember our favorite beach memories by.

Jamie Miller – Concept Work

I came across Jamie Miller’s portfolio while browsing the most recent edition of How Magazine and wow am I impressed. Her work is wonderful in it’s attention to detail (I’m especially enamored with her brand identities and packaging work) and those pieces that she has infused with her own humorous point of view are especially fun to look at. I spent quite a bit of time viewing this quirky concept work, the Official Bird Watching Guide for Cats, pictured above.

Hope your weekend was a fun one – ours here in Vancouver got rained out, but it’s looking like things will improve over the next few days!

My inspiration today comes from Tiril – who calls Norway home. Her photography drew me in at first glance – she shoots such ethereal, delicate images. For more photos do take a look at her Flickr stream here, and her blog here.

Hope your weekend is great!

Restless General Store

September 9, 2010

restless general store

I usually like to find shops from a bit closer to home to post about – but there were just too many great vintage finds in this shop to pass up. Norwich based Olivia Jeffries owns this shop, as well as another shop you can peek at here, featuring her fine art. I think the vintage paper pack was my favorite find in the shop. I’ve been going through old photos a bit lately, trying to get them organized. Some of my favorites are those of my grandparents, taken when my mom and her sisters were just little girls. They’re weathered now like these ones, but it’s fun to wonder what their lives were like and to see bits of their personalities shine through the photos.

I love those days – where you can lounge outside with a book and watch the world go by. Not having one of those days today, but still wanted to share these great items, they’re definitely reminding me to enjoy the last few days of summer before fall is upon us.

It’s a Dog’s Life…

September 7, 2010

dog art

I’m dog-sitting for a friend today – so naturally I thought I’d take a peek around Etsy to see just what’s available for the dog lovers amongst us! Turns out there are lots of cute things to be had, from custom made silhouettes of your dog beautifully screen printed on pillows from Ma Chere Finery, fun posters from SF Girl by Bay, and great collars at Nola and Spencer. Growing up we always had a dog – many of them were cute, all of them were big – and one in particular specialized in being a terror (oh the stories I could tell). We’re thinking we’ll wait to get a dog until we have kids – so that won’t be for a few years yet. Do you have a dog – any fun stories to share?
