Little Brown Pen – New Photos
I’ve long been a fan of Nichole’s artwork and when I popped in to her shop today I was delighted to see this new series of photos – all in bright yellow, a perfect summer pick me up!
Not only is Nichole a talented writer and photographer, she has a love for Paris that I’d say is unparalleled and also very inspiring. It’s so fun to read her story – she and her husband choose to forgo many every day luxuries to finance trips to Paris every 4-6 weeks. It’s a city that she loves not for it’s fashion or the hot spots, instead it’s something in the energy she finds there that keeps her going back for more. Again. And again. And again!
I know for a lot of us who are self-employed we choose to forgo certain things so we can be more dedicated to our craft. Do you have things you sacrifice so you can spend more time or money on the things you’re most passionate about?

Hey Amy
I love your post – the cheeriness of the yellow in the photos and the comments about sacrifice put a whole new light (colour) on something that is often thought of as a hard or negative thing. LIving a more eco-friendly life is about sacrifice – for me at the moment it’s not having a car, not buying new clothes and lifting a heavy bokashi bucket down the road to bury the leftovers at a community garden once a month.
Thanks for putting a new colour association with sacrifice – it’s now etched in my mind as a positive, cheery thing
What a wonderful story. I’ve been looking at “little brown pen” for some time now and never knew it.
I’ve often though of living like Nichole, though. Maybe instead of owning one house– having 2 or 3 tiny studios in all my favorite cities. How fun! Something to think about for retirement, maybe.
Hey Hilary – I’m so glad to hear you found that in the post. Reading your thoughts on it actually make me think about the concept of joy in sacrifice in some new ways. Hope all’s well out your way!

I’ve definitely dreamed about a more rootless life too – but reading Nichole’s story makes me consider it more seriously!

I spent a year living in France in the mid-90’s and I really need to find a way to get back there. It’s hard with little kids and a husband who’s job is pretty intense, so until I’ll just enjoy these photos and dream about wandering the arrondissements with my daughters one day.
