Cooking up a storm

Like many of you, I saw Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution preview on Oprah last week, and it got me thinking about ways to encourage myself to cook more and to eat more healthy foods. I like his approach and how it focuses on finding balance.

For inspiration, I’ve been perusing the recipes Jamie has on his website.

I also like the idea of using these recipe cards from Etsy. I think having these around would make collecting new recipes more fun!

I LOVED the first episode of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution last week. Some of it was shocking and sad, but I’m hoping that the show helps to open more people’s eyes to the problems that the food industry has created with so much processed crap.

We try to eat healthy as much as we can, but of course its hard to avoid any and all processed food entirely. I feel like every little step adds up though… For instance, we bought a VitaMix blender about a year ago, and it’s definitely helped us to work more whole fruits and veggies into our diets… It’s easy to whip up a great fruit smoothie for dessert instead of eating ice cream or something. We’ve also gotten into gardening more… our first garden last year was sort of hit and miss, but we’re expanding our efforts this year so that we can have more super fresh, and super cheap, herbs and veggies in our diet.

I think it’s all about making little changes that add up and turn into habits over time.

hey mallory – those smoothies sound amazing. i totally want something like that! you’re so right about making little changes. i’m also just working to make it more of a priority – one of the ones in life you don’t compromise on (at least not too often)… for now i’m hooked on convenience as it makes it easier to get more work done… but i don’t think it’s worth it in the long run!

I got to spend a week at rancho la puerta (http://rancholapuerta.com/) this year (was not a paying guest, but the guest of a friend) and it totally changed my attitude toward food. Although maybe I was headed down that path, having met with Rachel Avalon earlier in the year. Rachel advises to eat 60% raw; that’s become my goal. And I’ve cut out most dairy and meat and cut way back on coffee. http://www.rachelavalon.com
Eat food! Not too much! Mostly plants!

We’re definitely not the best at eating healthy, but we keep making small changes that are making a difference in the way we eat. I definitely plan ahead. If I have a plan in place then it’s much easier to come home from work and cook something healthy. I try to keep easy meals in the freezer for the days when no one wants to cook (soup, marinara sauce & chili are my go-to freezer meals). We’ve also made the change to homemade bread instead of store-bought. Each little step is taking us closer to our goal of eating homemade vs. all that pre-made stuff in the grocery store.
